Why Choose Rome and Its Surrounding Areas?

Rome combines the scale and opportunities of a major European capital with historic neighbourhoods, modern residential districts and quieter communities extending into the surrounding Lazio region. For people relocating from the UK, the city offers an enormous choice of places to live, international schools, established healthcare facilities and excellent connections with the rest of Italy and Europe.

Popular Areas

Where you choose to live in Rome can make a significant difference to day-to-day life. Prati is popular for its elegant streets, shops and proximity to the historic centre, while Parioli is a greener, largely residential district favoured by families and professionals. Monteverde offers a quieter residential atmosphere close to Villa Doria Pamphilj, one of Rome’s largest parks.

Areas including Trastevere and Testaccio provide a livelier atmosphere closer to the centre, while EUR offers wider streets, modern apartments and good transport connections south of central Rome. Families looking for more space may also consider districts towards the outskirts of the city or surrounding communities such as Frascati and the Castelli Romani.

Schools and Education

Rome has a broad choice of state, private and international education. Families moving from the UK can find schools offering British, International Baccalaureate and other international curricula, which can be particularly useful for children transferring from the UK education system.

Several international schools are located outside the historic centre, so school location and the daily journey should be considered carefully when choosing a home. Rome’s traffic can make a relatively short distance considerably longer at busy times.

For higher education, Rome is home to major institutions including Sapienza University of Rome, Tor Vergata and Roma Tre, alongside a number of international universities and study programmes.

Healthcare

Italy has a public healthcare system, the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), and Rome has numerous public hospitals, specialist facilities and private clinics. Major hospitals include Policlinico Umberto I, Gemelli University Hospital and San Camillo Forlanini.

People relocating permanently should check their eligibility and registration requirements for the Italian healthcare system. Private healthcare and English-speaking doctors are also available in Rome, which can be useful while becoming established in the city.

Getting Around Rome

Rome has Metro, bus, tram and suburban rail services, although where you live can have a significant effect on how easily you can travel without a car. Properties close to a Metro station can be particularly convenient for people commuting into central Rome.

Driving in the historic centre requires more planning. Rome operates ZTL restricted traffic zones, with vehicle access controlled at certain locations and times. This is also something we consider when planning a removal, particularly where a larger removal vehicle cannot reach the property directly.

Restaurants and Social Life

Rome’s food and social scene extends far beyond the busiest tourist areas. Neighbourhood trattorias, cafés, markets and local restaurants are an important part of everyday life, with districts such as Testaccio, Trastevere, Monti and Prati offering very different atmospheres.

Traditional Roman dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana and cacio e pepe remain central to the city’s food culture, while the size of the capital means there is also an extensive choice of international restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Parks and Outdoor Lifestyle

Despite its size, Rome has a surprising amount of green space. Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphilj and Villa Ada provide large parks within the city, while the surrounding Lazio countryside offers considerably more.

The Castelli Romani, lakes at Albano and Bracciano, and the Mediterranean coast are all within reach, giving residents plenty of options for weekends away from the centre.

Transport Links and Airports

Rome is extremely well connected for both domestic and international travel. Roma Termini is the city’s principal railway station, with high-speed trains connecting Rome with cities including Florence, Bologna, Milan and Naples.

Rome Fiumicino Airport provides extensive international connections, including regular services to the UK, while Ciampino Airport provides additional European routes. This makes Rome particularly practical for people relocating from Britain who expect to travel back to the UK regularly.

Our Removal Services

Our removal services include dedicated vehicles and flexible part-load groupage options, allowing us to provide the right service for anything from a few boxes to a complete household move.

Dedicated Luton Van

Ideal for: Apartments, student relocations and smaller household moves.

Our dedicated Luton vans offer approximately 18m³ of loading space with a payload of around 1,000kg, making them an ideal option for smaller household removals. Our standard service includes an experienced driver who assists with loading and unloading, with a second removal porter available where required.

As the vehicle is dedicated solely to your move, your belongings remain on the same van from collection through to delivery, with no transhipping or sharing of vehicle space with other customers.

Their smaller size makes Luton vans particularly useful for city and town moves, apartments and properties where access may be difficult for larger removal vehicles. Protective removal blankets and securing straps are used to protect and secure your belongings throughout the journey.

Our Removals Process

  • The Key Is Establishing the Volume

The first step is establishing how much you have to move. You can send us a list of the items, photographs or a WhatsApp video, and we’ll use this to assess the volume. If you already know the approximate volume or the type of removal vehicle you require, we can quote on that basis instead.

We’ll also need to know where you’re moving from and to, along with any important access information at either property. This might include restricted parking, narrow roads, stairs, lifts or anything else that could affect the collection or delivery.

Once we understand your move, we’ll prepare a clear quotation based on the service you need and work with you to arrange suitable collection and delivery dates. Where customs procedures are required, we’ll advise you on the documents we need from you and take care of the customs work associated with your removal.

Once everything is arranged, you can leave the rest to us. Our team will take care of the collection, customs procedures where required, secure transport and delivery of your belongings, keeping you informed throughout and making the whole process as straightforward as possible.

Key Considerations When Moving Abroad

  • Documents, Dates and Planning Ahead

When moving your belongings abroad, it is important to start gathering the documents that may be required for customs clearance. Requirements vary between countries and according to your individual circumstances, but commonly requested documents can include a copy of your passport, a detailed packing list, proof of your previous residence and evidence of your new residence abroad.

As a useful starting point, we recommend having proof of residence covering the previous 12 months, details of your new address and a clear inventory of the household goods you are moving. Additional documents may be required depending on the destination and whether you are transferring your normal residence. Your move manager will advise you on the documentation required for your particular move and help you through the customs process.

It is also worth establishing your moving dates as early as possible. Think about the earliest date your belongings will be ready for collection, the latest date you need to leave your current property and the earliest date you can receive your belongings at your new home. This helps us plan the most suitable collection and delivery schedule.

If there is a gap between leaving one property and gaining access to the next, you may need storage as part of your move. Let us know when discussing your requirements and we can take this into account when planning your removal.

Removals to Rome FAQs

How often do you run part-load removals to Rome?

We provide regular part-load and groupage services between the UK and Italy. On our Italian routes, we generally make deliveries in northern Italy first and then work our way south towards destinations such as Rome.

On the return journey, we make UK-bound collections as we work our way back north through Italy.

How long does a dedicated van from the UK to Rome take?

A dedicated van to Rome normally takes around 2–3 days from collection in the UK. The vehicle is allocated specifically to your move and travels directly rather than making the multiple deliveries associated with a part-load service.

Exact timings can still be affected by customs clearance, drivers’ hours, traffic and access at the delivery address.

Can you deliver into central Rome and the ZTL areas?

Yes, but access needs to be planned carefully. Rome has extensive ZTL restricted traffic zones, together with narrow streets and areas where parking a removal vehicle can be difficult.

We check the delivery access before your move and, where the main removal vehicle cannot reach the property, can plan alternative arrangements such as using a smaller vehicle to shuttle your belongings.

I’m moving into an apartment in Rome – what access information do you need?

We need to know the floor level, whether there is a lift, approximate lift dimensions, staircase access and where the removal vehicle can stop. Please also tell us about internal courtyards, gates or a long carry from the vehicle.

Many Roman properties are in older apartment buildings, and having a lift doesn’t necessarily mean that sofas, mattresses and larger furniture will fit inside it.

If I book a dedicated van to Rome, does weight matter?

Yes. Our dedicated vans can carry approximately 1,000 kg, so both weight and volume matter.

Heavy loads containing large quantities of books, tools, records, gym equipment, stone furniture or other dense items can reach the legal weight limit before the van is physically full. We consider both when planning your removal.

Where do you clear customs before delivering to Rome?

For Italian moves where customs attendance is required, we work with a customs partner in Varese in northern Italy. This is conveniently positioned for our vehicles before they continue south through Italy towards Rome.

Used household and personal effects are generally straightforward to clear when the correct documentation has been prepared. New goods may require additional customs procedures, so it is important to tell us if your shipment contains new or recently purchased items.

Is a part-load service suitable for a small move to Rome?

Yes. If you’re moving boxes, personal belongings or a smaller amount of furniture, part-load can be considerably more economical than paying for a dedicated vehicle.

Your belongings share vehicle space with other customers travelling on our Italian route. The trade-off is that collection and delivery dates need to be more flexible while we coordinate the different consignments.

I need my belongings in Rome for a particular date. Should I use part-load or dedicated?

If the date is important, a dedicated removal is usually the better option. The vehicle is reserved for your move, giving us much greater control over the collection and delivery schedule and typically allowing a 2–3 day transit to Rome.

Part-load is designed more around economy and works best when you can give us flexibility with your dates.

Do you deliver outside Rome and into the surrounding areas?

Yes. We cover Rome and surrounding areas, including properties outside the city centre and communities around the wider Rome area.

Access becomes particularly important with more rural or hillside properties. Narrow roads, tight entrances or limited turning space can sometimes mean a smaller vehicle is required for the final delivery.

Can you collect in Rome for a removal back to the UK?

Yes. Our service operates in both directions. On our groupage routes, we generally make deliveries as we travel south through Italy and then make UK-bound collections as we work our way back north.

If you need collection in Rome on a specific date, we can also arrange a dedicated Rome-to-UK removal rather than waiting for the next suitable part-load route.
