Professional Removals to Bulgaria: Moving Home with Confidence

Bulgaria offers a wide choice of places to settle, ranging from its busy capital and regional cities to Black Sea resorts, mountain communities and rural areas. Some customers relocate for employment, retirement or family reasons, while others are returning to their home country after building a life in the UK.

Sofia is the country’s capital and largest city, combining residential neighbourhoods with Bulgaria’s principal centre for employment, business and education. Plovdiv offers a different environment centred around one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, while Varna and Burgas are major destinations on the Black Sea coast. Other customers may be returning to smaller cities, towns or family properties in more rural parts of the country.

For Bulgarian nationals returning from Britain, the journey home can involve considerably more possessions than when they originally left. Years in the UK may mean furniture, appliances, children’s belongings and everything else associated with an established household now needs to make the journey too. Our range of vehicle sizes, shared-load services and container options means the removal can be planned around the household you’ve built.

With depots throughout the UK and Europe, we can coordinate your move from anywhere in the UK to destinations throughout Bulgaria and elsewhere in Europe.

Ways to Move Your Belongings to Bulgaria

The best transport method will depend on the volume and weight of your possessions, access at each property, your preferred moving dates and how much flexibility you have. From a dedicated van to a shared load or shipping container, we’ll help identify an option suited to your relocation.

Dedicated Luton Van

Ideal for: Apartments, student relocations and smaller household moves.

Our dedicated Luton vans provide approximately 18m³ of loading capacity with a payload of around 1,000kg, making them a practical solution for smaller UK to Bulgaria removals. They can accommodate many apartment moves, employment relocations and customers transporting a more limited quantity of furniture, boxes and personal belongings.

An experienced driver assists with loading and unloading as part of the standard service. An additional removal porter can also be provided where required.

Because the van is dedicated entirely to your move, your possessions stay aboard the same vehicle between collection in the UK and delivery in Bulgaria rather than sharing space with another customer’s consignment. Its smaller size can also provide useful flexibility when delivering to residential streets or properties where access for a large truck is difficult. Professional removal blankets and securing equipment are used to protect belongings during transportation

Important Considerations When Moving to Bulgaria

  • Visa and Residence Requirements:

UK nationals who aren’t protected by the Withdrawal Agreement can visit Bulgaria visa-free for short stays, subject to the Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule. Time spent in other Schengen countries also counts towards this limit. For longer stays, the appropriate Bulgarian visa or residence permit will normally be required.

  • Customs Procedures:

Household possessions travelling from Great Britain to Bulgaria are entering the EU from a non-EU country, so customs procedures need to be considered as part of the relocation. Where someone is genuinely transferring their normal residence, relief from import duties may be available for qualifying personal property, subject to the applicable conditions and supporting documentation.

  • Healthcare:

Bulgaria operates a state health insurance system through the National Health Insurance Fund. The arrangements applying to someone moving from the UK depend on their residence, employment and insurance status. Some UK nationals may also qualify for UK-funded healthcare through an S1 form. Anyone moving permanently should establish how their healthcare will be covered before relocating.

  • Employment and Work:

UK citizens who aren’t covered by relevant Withdrawal Agreement rights are treated as third-country nationals for Bulgarian employment purposes. Access to the labour market is governed by Bulgaria’s labour migration rules, and the appropriate employment and residence route should be established before relocating for work.

  • Official Documentation:

Keep passports, residence paperwork, proof of your Bulgarian address, employment documents and customs information readily accessible during the move. Depending on your circumstances, proof of accommodation and other supporting evidence may be required when completing residence formalities.

Bulgaria Removals FAQs

Yes. Bulgarian nationals returning home after living in the UK may be able to claim transfer-of-residence relief on qualifying personal property. EU rules generally provide relief from import duty and VAT where someone transfers their normal residence from outside the EU and meets the relevant conditions. These normally include having lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months and having possessed and used qualifying goods for at least six months before leaving.
