Important Considerations When Moving to Hungary

Visa and Residence Requirements:
British citizens who aren’t protected by the Withdrawal Agreement need to establish the appropriate residence arrangements when relocating to Hungary. The requirements depend on the purpose of your stay, such as employment, family, study or another qualifying reason.

Customs Procedures:
Household possessions travelling from Great Britain to Hungary enter the EU from a non-EU country and require the appropriate customs formalities. People transferring their normal residence may qualify for customs duty and VAT relief on eligible personal belongings when the required conditions are met.

Transfer of Residence Relief:
To qualify for relief, your normal residence must generally have been outside the EU customs territory for a continuous period of at least 12 months. Qualifying non-consumable personal belongings generally need to have been in your possession and used at your former normal residence for at least six months before you moved.

Separate Consignments:
Qualifying personal belongings don’t necessarily have to arrive in Hungary in one shipment. Eligible goods can be released for free circulation in several separate consignments within 12 months of transferring your normal residence to the EU, provided the applicable conditions are met.

EORI Number:
An EORI number is required on the customs declaration used for the relevant import procedure. Customers who don’t already have an EORI number can apply for one through Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration.

If you’re transferring your normal residence and qualify for customs relief, eligible personal property can be released for free circulation in several separate consignments within the applicable 12-month period.
This can be useful if you’re moving to Hungary in stages or initially moving into temporary accommodation.
There are restrictions.
Personal property imported under transfer-of-residence relief generally can’t be lent, pledged, hired out or transferred during the first 12 months after its duty-free release without first notifying the relevant customs authority.
