Why Choose Lisbon and Its Surrounding Areas?

Lisbon offers the attractions of a European capital alongside a warmer climate, Atlantic coastline and a more relaxed pace of life. People relocating from the UK can choose between characterful city neighbourhoods, modern residential districts and coastal communities, with very different styles of property and surroundings available across the wider Lisbon region.

Popular Areas

Lisbon is made up of distinctive neighbourhoods. Estrela, Lapa and Campo de Ourique are established residential areas popular with families and professionals, while Avenidas Novas and Alvalade offer wider streets, good amenities and convenient connections across the city.

For those wanting the character of historic Lisbon, areas such as Alfama, Graça and Príncipe Real put you closer to the traditional heart of the capital. Older districts can, however, present challenges on moving day, with narrow streets, steep hills, restricted parking and apartment buildings that may have small lifts or no lift at all.

Cascais, Estoril and the Coast

The wider Lisbon area is particularly attractive if you want to combine access to the capital with coastal living. Cascais and Estoril are well-established choices, offering beaches, restaurants, shops and residential areas within commuting distance of Lisbon.

Between the city and Cascais are Oeiras, Carcavelos and Parede, providing further options along the coast. Families looking for more space and greener surroundings may also consider Sintra and its surrounding communities, where the atmosphere and property choices can be very different from central Lisbon.

Schools and Family Life

Families relocating to Lisbon have access to Portuguese state and private education as well as a good selection of international schools across the wider region. Several are located around Lisbon, Cascais, Estoril and Sintra, so families moving with school-age children may want to consider school location before deciding where to live.

The ability to choose between city, suburban and coastal living is one of the area’s main attractions for families. Cascais and the surrounding coast are particularly popular with international residents, while Lisbon itself provides easier access to the capital’s employment, entertainment and cultural attractions.

Food, Beaches and Lifestyle

Lisbon has a thriving restaurant and café scene, ranging from traditional Portuguese tascas, bakeries and seafood restaurants to modern and international dining. Chiado, Príncipe Real, Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré are among the best-known central areas for restaurants, bars and social life, while residential neighbourhoods offer a more local atmosphere.

The coast is also within easy reach. Carcavelos, Estoril and Cascais provide popular beaches west of Lisbon, with the Atlantic coastline continuing towards Guincho. Across the Tagus, Costa da Caparica provides another long stretch of beaches close to the capital.

Transport and Removal Access

Lisbon has an extensive network of metro, bus, tram and suburban rail services, with rail connections extending towards Cascais and Sintra. Lisbon Airport is also conveniently located for regular travel between Portugal and the UK.

For removals, access is particularly important in Lisbon’s older neighbourhoods. Narrow streets, parking restrictions, steep approaches and apartment access can determine which size of vehicle is suitable. We ask for access details, photographs or video where necessary before your move so we can plan accordingly.

Whether you’re moving to a city apartment, a family home in Oeiras, a coastal property around Cascais or somewhere towards Sintra, we’ll plan your removal around the volume of your belongings, property access, customs requirements and preferred moving dates.

Our Removal Services

Our removal services include dedicated vehicles and flexible part-load groupage options, allowing us to provide the right service for anything from a few boxes to a complete household move.

Dedicated Luton Van

Ideal for: Apartments, student relocations and smaller household moves.

Our dedicated Luton vans offer approximately 18m³ of loading space with a payload of around 1,000kg, making them an ideal option for smaller household removals. Our standard service includes an experienced driver who assists with loading and unloading, with a second removal porter available where required.

As the vehicle is dedicated solely to your move, your belongings remain on the same van from collection through to delivery, with no transhipping or sharing of vehicle space with other customers.

Their smaller size makes Luton vans particularly useful for city and town moves, apartments and properties where access may be difficult for larger removal vehicles. Protective removal blankets and securing straps are used to protect and secure your belongings throughout the journey.

Our Removals Process

  • The Key Is Establishing the Volume

The first step is establishing how much you have to move. You can send us a list of the items, photographs or a WhatsApp video, and we’ll use this to assess the volume. If you already know the approximate volume or the type of removal vehicle you require, we can quote on that basis instead.

We’ll also need to know where you’re moving from and to, along with any important access information at either property. This might include restricted parking, narrow roads, stairs, lifts or anything else that could affect the collection or delivery.

Once we understand your move, we’ll prepare a clear quotation based on the service you need and work with you to arrange suitable collection and delivery dates. Where customs procedures are required, we’ll advise you on the documents we need from you and take care of the customs work associated with your removal.

Once everything is arranged, you can leave the rest to us. Our team will take care of the collection, customs procedures where required, secure transport and delivery of your belongings, keeping you informed throughout and making the whole process as straightforward as possible.

Key Considerations When Moving Abroad

  • Documents, Dates and Planning Ahead

When moving your belongings abroad, it is important to start gathering the documents that may be required for customs clearance. Requirements vary between countries and according to your individual circumstances, but commonly requested documents can include a copy of your passport, a detailed packing list, proof of your previous residence and evidence of your new residence abroad.

As a useful starting point, we recommend having proof of residence covering the previous 12 months, details of your new address and a clear inventory of the household goods you are moving. Additional documents may be required depending on the destination and whether you are transferring your normal residence. Your move manager will advise you on the documentation required for your particular move and help you through the customs process.

It is also worth establishing your moving dates as early as possible. Think about the earliest date your belongings will be ready for collection, the latest date you need to leave your current property and the earliest date you can receive your belongings at your new home. This helps us plan the most suitable collection and delivery schedule.

If there is a gap between leaving one property and gaining access to the next, you may need storage as part of your move. Let us know when discussing your requirements and we can take this into account when planning your removal.

Removals to Portugal FAQs

How often do you run removals to Lisbon?

We regularly operate removal services between the UK and Portugal. Depending on your volume and preferred dates, we can arrange either an economical part-load/groupage service or a dedicated vehicle travelling specifically for your move.

Can you collect from anywhere in the UK for a move to Lisbon?

Yes. We collect throughout the UK and deliver across Lisbon and the surrounding region, including Cascais, Estoril, Oeiras, Carcavelos and Sintra. We can also arrange removals from Lisbon back to the UK.

Can you access apartments in central Lisbon?

Usually, but access needs checking in advance. Areas such as Alfama, Graça and Bairro Alto can have narrow streets, steep hills, parking restrictions and older buildings with limited lift access. Send us photographs or a short video and we’ll plan the most suitable vehicle and loading arrangements.

What happens if your removal vehicle cannot reach my Lisbon property?

Where direct access isn’t practical for a larger vehicle, we can plan a smaller shuttle vehicle or alternative loading arrangement. It’s important that we know about narrow roads, underground parking, pedestrian areas or difficult access before moving day.

Do my belongings need customs clearance when moving from the UK to Lisbon?

Yes. Since the UK is outside the EU, household goods entering Portugal are subject to customs procedures. People transferring their normal residence may qualify for relief from Portuguese import duties and taxes if the relevant conditions are met. We’ll explain the documentation required for your move.

How long does a removal from the UK to Lisbon take?

A dedicated removal provides the quickest and most direct option because the vehicle is allocated specifically to your move. Part-load services take longer because your belongings travel alongside other customers’ consignments. We’ll provide an expected collection and delivery schedule when quoting.

Is a part-load service suitable for a small move to Lisbon?

Yes. Part loads are particularly useful if you’re moving a few boxes, personal belongings, a small apartment or several pieces of furniture. You only pay for the space your belongings occupy rather than the cost of a complete dedicated vehicle.

Can you move me to Cascais, Estoril or Sintra rather than Lisbon itself?

Yes. Our Lisbon removals cover the wider region, including Cascais, Estoril, Oeiras, Carcavelos, Parede and Sintra. Properties outside central Lisbon can have very different access requirements, so we’ll check the location when planning your move.

Do I need to reserve parking for the removal vehicle in Lisbon?

It depends on the property and local parking arrangements. Central Lisbon can be particularly difficult for larger removal vehicles, so suitable stopping or parking arrangements may need to be considered beforehand. Give us the exact delivery address and we’ll advise what access information we need.

Can you store my belongings if my Lisbon property isn’t ready?

Yes. Storage can be incorporated into your removal if there’s a gap between leaving your UK property and gaining access to your new home in Portugal. This can be useful when completion dates, rental agreements or Portuguese customs arrangements don’t line up perfectly with your preferred moving dates.
